Decorating your walls with wallpaper can instantly transform the look and feel of any room. However, before you embark on your wallpapering journey, it's essential to accurately measure your walls and calculate how much wallpaper you'll need. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before you begin measuring, gather the necessary tools:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper for note-taking

Step 2: Measure the Height of Your Walls

Start by measuring the height of each wall you plan to wallpaper, from floor to ceiling. Measure at multiple points along the wall to account for any irregularities. Record the highest measurement to ensure you have enough wallpaper to cover the entire height.

Example:

  • Wall Height: 96 inches (243.8 cm)

Step 3: Measure the Width of Your Walls

Next, measure the width of each wall you plan to wallpaper. Measure horizontally from one end of the wall to the other, including any doors or windows within that space. Again, measure at multiple points along the wall and record the widest measurement.

Example:

  • Wall Width: 144 inches (365.8 cm)

Step 4: Calculate the Total Square Footage

To determine the total square footage of the walls you'll be covering, multiply the height of each wall by its corresponding width. Add up the square footage of all the walls to get the total area.

Example:

  • Total Square Footage = Wall Height x Wall Width
  • Total Square Footage = 96 inches x 144 inches = 13,824 square inches

Step 5: Convert to Wallpaper Sheets

Since our wallpaper comes in sheets that are 28 inches (71 cm) wide, you'll need to calculate how many sheets you'll need to cover the total square footage. Divide the total square footage by the width of each sheet to find the number of sheets required.

Example:

  • Number of Sheets = Total Square Footage / Sheet Width
  • Number of Sheets = 13,824 square inches / 28 inches = 494.57 sheets

Step 6: Round Up

It's always a good idea to round up to the nearest whole number to ensure you have enough wallpaper to cover any mistakes or miscalculations. In this case, you would round up to 495 sheets.

Step 7: Final Check

Before making your purchase, double-check your measurements and calculations to ensure accuracy. It's also wise to add an extra sheet or two to your order as a precaution.

By following these steps, you can confidently measure your walls and calculate the amount of wallpaper needed for your next decorating project. With the right amount of wallpaper on hand, you'll be well-equipped to create a stunning and cohesive look in any room of your home.
